The Colosseum, probably the most famous monument in the World, is the popular name of Amphitheater Flavium that was started by the Emperor Vespasianum and completed by his son Tito in the 80 AD. The name of "Colosseum" is due to a statue ("colosso") of Nero once situated next to the building. This monumental arena was destined to the fights among the gladiators (munera) and to the simulations of hunting to fierce and exotic animals (venationes). The exterior borrows elements from Greek architecture. Every arch is framed by Doric, Ionic and Corinthian columns. It could easily accommodate about 70,000 spectators who entered through the 76 gates on the ground level. The spectators were seated by rank with the topmost seats reserved for women and children. The basement level, now exposed, was covered with a wooden floor strewn with sea sand. The level underneath contained elaborate corridors, service rooms, elevators, gladiatorial barracks, and rooms for wild beasts.
The Roman Forum is considered one of the greatest attractions in Rome. It must be visited by everyone who loves the history and the archaeology of Roman Empire. The Forum represents the nucleus of the political, juridical and social life. It is located in Via dei Fori, next to the Campidoglio. Among the monuments that deserve mention, we remember the basilica Emilia, the pavement of the ancient road named Argiletum, the Curia, the arc of Septimus Severius, the temple of Vesta, the temple of Antonino and Faustina and the basilica of Massenzio.
