As one of the earliest museums in Europe and the most prominent in Italy, the Uffizi Gallery offers a unique opportunity to witness the evolution of Italian and European art throughout the centuries.
The Galleria degli Uffizi is the most visited (over 1.5 million people per year, closely followed by Michelangelo's David) tourist attraction in Florence, and is home to the finest collection of paintings and pictures in Italy - it is undoubtedly one of the finest museums in the world.
The Palace: Wanted by Cosimo I around the middle of the 1500s, the Uffizi Palace has been designed by Giorgio Vasari. The purpose of the extraordinary construction was to house the thirteen Magistracies or Uffizi, from which the Palace will take its name, which were located in separate locations. After Vasari's death, the construction of the Uffizi Palace was entrusted to Buontalenti and Alfonso Parigi. The building has the shape of a horseshoe: two parallel buildings connected by a connecting corridor. The two floors of the building rest on a loggia supported by columns and decorated with niches, within which were placed the statue of the flowers which were distinct from the Middle Ages to the nineteenth century. In 1993, the Palace was the victim of the attack on the Accademia dei Gergofili, but it was soon restored to its original splendor.
Home to invaluable works of art, its collection spans from Medici's classical sculptures to Medieval and Renaissance paintings including Michelangelo's Holy Family and Botticelli's Birth of Venus. The Uffizi Gallery is a must-visit for every art and history enthusiast and the most popular attraction in Florence. The Gallery hosts an incredible artworks collection belonging to, for example, Botticelli, Giotto, Cimabue, Beato Angelico, Piero della Francesca, Masaccio, Leonardo da Vinci, Michelangelo, Mantegna, Correggio, Raffaello, Tiziano, Tintoretto, Paolo Uccello, Chardin, Pieter Paul Rubens, Francisco Goya, Caravaggio, Giorgio Vasari, Canaletto, Bernini, Rembrandt, El Greco, Albrecht Dürer, Lucas Cranach, Antonello da Messina, Simone Martini and more.
Visit Michelangelo's David home and admire that masterpiece and other paintings and sculptures by the great masters of the Florentine 14th and 15th centuries without queueing up!
The Accademia Gallery is a mecca for art lovers because it is home to Michelangelo's David. You can admire that and other Michelangelo’s masterpieces and paintings and sculptures by the great masters of the Florentine 14th and 15th centuries.
Thousands of tourists every day stop in Piazza della Signoria to take a picture of Michelangelo's David statue, but many ignore that it is a replica. Witness the real beauty of the original statue of David inside the Accademia Gallery in Florence. Let yourself be surprised by other works by Michelangelo, such as the unfinished statues of St. Matthew from Florence Cathedral, four Prisoners sculpted for the Tomb of Pope Julius II, and the Palestrina Pietà of dubious attribution.
