The church of Santa Maria delle Grazie was built from 1465 to 1482.
From 1490 Ludovico il Moro wantedd the best artists of the time to make substantial changes. Bramante was entrusted the task of creating the new “tribuna” and enlarged the church, the cloister and built the new Sacristy, while Leonardo da Vinci was commissioned the famous fresco of The Last Supper.
The famous Last Supper known around the world and admired by millions of visitors every year does not need much explanation, so we dedicate a little speech to the Atlanticus Code which is the largest and most amazing collection of Leonardo “papers” (the adjective 'Atlantic' derived from the format of the paper, which is typical of an "atlas').
The Atlanticus Code:
The Sculptor Pompeo Leoni, at the end of '500 assembled in a single volume of over 400 sheets more than 1700 Leonardo da Vinci’s drawings and writings. The volume was donated to the Biblioteca Ambrosiana in 1637 with other manuscripts of Leonardo. After an interlude in Paris by Napoleon, all the material has returned to Milan.
The Atlanticus Code contains the intellectual life of Leonardo from 1478 to 1519, ranging from the sciences (mechanics, mathematics, astronomy, botany, physical geography, chemistry and buildings, custom) to the famous 'machines' (war, to fly to descend into the sea) to architectural projects, studies and even pictorial tales, fables and philosophical considerations.
