Bargello Museum

Visit this National Museum in Florence downtown, where you can admire Donatello's David bronze, one of the most famous pieces of Italian Renaissance sculpture.

A fortress in downtown Florence, this building was started in 1255 to be the headquarter of the Capitano del Popolo and later, of the Podestà. A prison since 16th century, it owes his name to the police chief position of that time. The Bargello became National Museum in 1865.

This 13th- and 14th-century fortress served first as a prison, then as the heavily guarded residence of the podestà (the chief magistrate). For a long time, there were cages affixed to the outside of its upper stories, where the worst criminals and traitors were imprisoned and left to die in public view. The Bargello opened as a national museum (Museo Nazionale del Bargello) in 1865, displaying the largest Italian collection of gothic and Reinassance sculptures (14–17th century).
Inside this foreboding exterior are a graceful courtyard, a loggia and staircase, and a large collection of Florentine and Tuscan sculpture.
The museum houses masterpieces by Michelangelo, such as his Bacchus, Pitti Tondo (or Madonna and Child), Brutus and David-Apollo.
Its collection includes Donatello's David and St. George Tabernacle, Vincenzo Gemito's Pescatore ("fisherboy"), Jacopo Sansovino's Bacco, Giambologna's L’Architettura and his Mercurio and many works from the Della Robbia family. Benvenuto Cellini is represented with his bronze bust of Cosimo I.  The museum also has a fine collection of ceramics (maiolica), textile, tapestries, ivory, silver, armours and old coins.
It also features the competing designs on Isaac's Sacrifice (Sacrificio di Isacco) that were performed by Lorenzo Ghiberti and Filippo Brunelleschi to win the contest for the second set of doors of the Florentine Baptistry (1401).
